Occupy the Minnesota Way

During a recent video shoot, we couldn't help noticing the distinct differences of the occupy movement in Minnesota to protests elsewhere.  Demonstrations in the government plaza in Minneapolis have both a welcoming Minnesota Nice atmosphere, as well as clear communication and cooperation with law enforcement officers in the area.

Progress On Our Doorstep: Laying Track on University

Progress happens gradually.  Over the course of six months since major construction of Central Corridor LRT system, it's been hard to track gradual change day to day.

But this short video sequence looks back at drastic changes to the avenue since May 2011, showing road work, re-routing traffic, and rail lines installed late last week.

VIDEO: Farm to School Gaining Momentum

Think back to your school cafeteria. Chances are much of the cuisine included highly-processed food-like substances shipped in from out of the state. Canned. Frozen. Preserved. Nuked.  

Minnesota is leading the way to bring nutritious, local foods back into the lunch hour.  IATP Local Foods Director JoAnne Berkenkamp says it's an economic development opportunity for communities during the fall harvest, and a dependable income for small-scale farmers across the state.

VIDEO: LaHood Visits Union Depot

Voicing support for further infrastruture investment, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood visited St. Paul's Union Depot. Both the renovation of the Depot and the construction of the CCLRT are symbols, he said, of national significance, moving transit into the 21st century and putting people back to work.

U.S. Transportation Sectretary Ray LaHood was in St. Paul this week talking about the need to move forward with rebuilding roads, bridges, and transit lines in Minnesota. This kind of infrastructure investment will put people to work at a time of high unemployment, and solidify the next generation of transporation.

VIDEO: Bailout Needed to Protect Homeowners

While praising President Obama's most recent jobs plan, former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich added it should be bigger to address the depth of the economic crisis.

Speaking last week to a group of progressive Minnesota media outlets, Reich also explained policies to sure up the housing market are needed to ensure a stronger rebound. He said the initial bank bailout should have gone further in protecting people from foreclosures.

Despite a state government shutdown that froze dozens of Minnesota construction projects, the Central Corridor Light Rail project progressed on schedule.
