We need to get health care reform now.

“Nationwide, Lavizzo-Mourey said that the cost to American businesses for their workers’ health care could double. The study also reported that the number of uninsured Americans could reach almost 66 million and individual and family spending on health care would jump 46 to 68 percent, with middle-class families hardest hit.”

“Keith Ferguson, a former plumber at the University of Minnesota, is among them. The Maple Grove father of four got his final unemployment check last week and is wondering how he’ll pay child support and feed himself. He said it’s not fair that Minnesota would be left out of the extension.

Ferguson has already dropped his health insurance because he couldn’t afford the premiums and his savings is down to $3,000, much of which he has earmarked for child support, rent and food. Making matters worse, his girlfriend, an accountant, exhausted her unemployment benefits three weeks ago.”

“It will also pay for advocacy work at the Legislature as the hospital faces big budget cuts due to the elimination of the state General Assistance Medical Care Program for poor adults.

HCMC assumes it will lose about $43 million in direct funding in the first year. The Hennepin County board is considering a 3 percent property tax hike to help cover it.”
