MN Headlines: Obama Visit, City Budgets, Teacher Generosity
September 14th, 2009 at 2:21 pm By Nora FerrellA look at today’s news:
Star Tribune: Cities pare back for future
Minnesota cities are struggling, and there’s no relief in sight
“The city-state financial relationship has been evolving for at least a decade, Miller said. But this year municipalities are reeling from state aid reductions that were made in December and July as the state dealt with its own fiscal crisis. Relief from the State Capitol appears unlikely over the next few years with continuing big budget deficits projected.”
St. Cloud Times: Borlaug, who saved millions from hunger, dies
“Norman E. Borlaug saved more lives than any man in human history,” said Josette Sheeran, executive director of the U.N. World Food Program. “His heart was as big as his brilliant mind, but it was his passion and compassion that moved the world.”
KARE: Obama brings huge crowds to Minneapolis
President Obama’s visit to Minneapolis Saturday was the talk of the town.
Star Tribune: Pawlenty backs off on constitutional health care gambit
“Invoking state sovereignty under that amendment was raised as a possibility by Pawlenty last week as he roundly criticized President Obama’s health care plans. At one point he suggested that a lawsuit could be the best recourse.
By Sunday, however, Pawlenty was inching away from using the 10th Amendment to block any federal health care reforms that ultimately become law.”
The Free Press: Teacher give big to food shelf
A round of applause for Mankato teachers making huge annual donations to the local food bank ECHO Food Shelf. Looks like 2009 was a banner year!
MinnPost: National parks, including Minnesota’s Voyageurs, to get their own U.S. coins
State park quarters to debut next year! (Although Minnesota’s quarter won’t be out until 2018.)
“Striking while the molds are hot, the U.S. Mint announced this week that its highly popular 50-state quarter program would be succeeded by another commemorative run called America the Beautiful.”
